Uber has written a blog about the award on its website which you can read by clicking here. For many people, prisoners are out of sight and out of mind. They may not feel much sympathy for them. But something is seriously wrong when our prisons are disproportionately filled by people of colour, people denied an education and people suffering mental ill health.

In this study, sex and ethnicity differential pattern of COVID was not adequately explained by variations in cardiometabolic factors, 25 OH -vitamin D levels or socio-economic factors. Factors which underlie ethnic differences in COVID may not be easily captured, and so investigation of alternative biological and genetic susceptibilities as well as more comprehensive assessment of the complex economic, social and behavioural differences should be prioritised.

Variations in cardiometabolic disease burden 4 , oestrogen pathway activity 5 , vitamin D levels 6 and angiotensin-converting enzyme ACE 2 receptor expression 7 have been proposed as potential explanations for the differential pattern of disease severity. Furthermore, disparities in socio-economic standards, housing conditions, socialization habits and risk perception have potential implications for risk of exposure and transmission.

Understanding the significance of these factors is urgently needed to inform public health and research efforts. We therefore investigated, in the UK Biobank UKB cohort, whether differential patterns of COVID incidence and severity by sex and ethnicity might be explained by cardiometabolic, socio-economic, lifestyle and behavioural exposures. UKB is a prospective cohort study of over half a million men and women from across the UK covering a range of urban and rural settings. Individuals who were unable to consent were not recruited.

Research from the Office of National Statistics ONS found that presenting all of the ethnic group options on a single page caused some users to try and select more than one option. Splitting the question across 2 pages solved this problem in testing with more than users. You should allow users to enter a different ethnic group in case theirs is not covered by the categories provided. Studies to date have incompletely parsed obesity from comorbidities such Coronavirus (COVID) related deaths by ethnic group, England.

Metrics details. Understanding of the role of ethnicity and socioeconomic position in the risk of developing SARS-CoV-2 infection is limited. We investigated this in the UK Biobank study. The UK Biobank study recruited 40—year-olds in — from the general population, collecting information about self-defined ethnicity and socioeconomic variables including area-level socioeconomic deprivation and educational attainment. Poisson regression with robust standard errors was used to assess risk ratios RRs between the exposures and dichotomous variables for being tested, having a positive test and testing positive in hospital.

We also investigated whether ethnicity and socioeconomic position were associated with having a positive test amongst those tested. We adjusted for covariates including age, sex, social variables including healthcare work and household size , behavioural risk factors and baseline health. Black and south Asian groups were more likely to test positive RR 3.

These ethnic groups were more likely to be hospital cases compared to the white British. Adjustment for baseline health and behavioural risk factors led to little change, with only modest attenuation when accounting for socioeconomic variables. Socioeconomic deprivation and having no qualifications were consistently associated with a higher risk of confirmed infection RR 2. Some minority ethnic groups have a higher risk of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in the UK Biobank study, which was not accounted for by differences in socioeconomic conditions, baseline self-reported health or behavioural risk factors.

An urgent response to addressing these elevated risks is required.

Numerous minority ethnic groups in these countries live with a greater burden of obesity and other chronic diseases. We synthesize a range of potential biological, socioeconomic, behavioral, and sociological contributors to the disparate outcomes for people with obesity and minority ethnic groups in COVID Initial retrospective cohort analyses have demonstrated higher rates of hospitalization and intensive care, including invasive mechanical ventilation, for patients with obesity [ 5 , 6 ].

Though these observational results do not assess mortality outcomes and adjust for few comorbidities, they signal potential biologic vulnerability for a large proportion of people worldwide living with obesity.
